A recent survey conducted on 28 police forces in parts of the UK have revealed a disturbing number of tickets issued over a five-and-a-half-year period. The number stands at 17,775 and includes offences such as driving the incorrect way up slip-roads, stopping in live lanes, and performing U-Turns on motorways! Which are what instructors would call ‘big no-nos.’ The most regular offence, observed by The Auto Express, was motorists making inappropriate stops on the hard-shoulder or emergency refuge area. Between 2016 and mid-2021, this offence accounted for 6,821 issued tickets.
In a dual-control car, with an approved driving instructor, learners have been able to take motorway lessons since 2018. Interestingly, Auto Express found that 514 learners had to be stopped because they were found flouting these caveats. Hugo Griffiths, the consumer editor for the motoring magazine said ‘Much of the recent focus on motorways has been around smart-motorways, but we rarely discuss the key factor that determines how safe our roads are: driver behaviour.’ He goes on to say that human error is the cause for almost every collision, and while this is easy to understand, it is difficult to understand how someone might believe a U-turn on the motorway is ever a good idea.
Even during intensive driving lessons in Newbury, it is necessary for the instructor to highlight the safety risks involved in these kinds of reckless manoeuvres, and the potential financial costs if given a ticket.

Just passed first time with only 4 months of lessons with Peter, he is such an amazing instructor and very supportive with dealing with anxious students.
Hi Grace.
What a great 4 months teaching you. I’m going to miss playing the “yellow car” game 🙂
