The theory test was introduced in the UK on 1st July 1996. Prior to that, when I took my driving test, examiners flicked through the highway code at the end of the driving test and asked the pupil things like "What does that sign mean?". The introduction of the theory test enabled a more thorough test of a candidates knowledge of the highway code and other aspects relating to driving.

There are a number of topics that the test covers; accidents, alertness, attitude, documents, hazard awareness, motorway rules, other types of vehicles, road & traffic signs, rules of the road, safety margins, safety and your vehicle, vehicle handling, video clips and vulnerable road users.

If you are struggling with any of the questions and answers, ask your driving instructor for help and to explain the answers to you. We would always recommend booking your driving test as soon as possible. Allow yourself around 3 to 4 weeks to practice both the questions and the hazard perception test. It is good to get the theory out of the way early as you can not book your driving test until your theory is passed. The theory test is valid for 2 years. If your driving test isn't passed in that time then the theory test will have to be retaken.
