This post is the third instalment of the ‘Show Me, Tell Me’ series, where I provide you with the 14 possible questions you could be posed during your practical test in Thatcham and elsewhere. Whether you have chosen manual or automatic driving lessons, it is imperative that you understand the following questions.
8. Tell me how you’d check the brake lights are working on the vehicle.
A: Explain how you would operate the brake pedal and make use of any reflective surfaces you can observe from the driver’s seat, or you could always ask for someone else’s help.
9. Tell me how you’d check the power-assisted steering is working before starting a journey.
A: If the steering is heavy, this may indicate a problem with the system. 2 checks can be made to ensure working-order.
Apply gentle pressure on the steering wheel, while the engine is turned on. This should result in a subtle but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate. Alternatively, turning the steering wheel immediately after moving off will give an indication that the power assistance is working.
10. Tell me how you’d switch on the rear fog light(s) and explain when you’d use them.
A: Operate the switch and turn on dipped headlights and ignition if necessary. Check warning light is on. Explain how they reveal your presence in fog.
11. Tell me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you’d know the main beam is on.
A: Operate the switch and then check with dashboard’s main beam warning light.
