Driving Schools in Thatcham and Newbury will have to give new guidance to learner drivers as the UK Government updates The Highway Code. To be precise, these updates will amend 33 of the pre-existing rules established and add two unique additions. A press release was given by Highways England on Friday 18th 2021, which highlighted the changes and how they are expected to make the roads safer for everyone, and will include:
• More comprehensive instruction on where drivers should stop during an emergency.
• Explanations on using variable speed limits, and how they handle congestion.
• Information on lanes closed by a Red X, and why drivers should not use these lanes.
The Head of Road Safety for Highways England, Jeremy Phillips is quoted with saying “The New Edition of The Highway Code can give everyone on our roads the confidence that that they have knowledge and skills to safely get from A to B.”
The updates will also explore some of the leading factors on safety-related incidents, such as driving without a valid MOT, towing-safety, the dangers of tailgaiting, the lethality of tiredness, and driving during a stretch of roadworks.
The amendments described above follow a governmental consultation which took place from 1st March to 29th March 2021. The consultation received over 3’210 contributions by individuals and organisations, each responding to 40 questions set out by Highways England.
I’m hopeful that these changes will clarify any of the code that was originally confusing.

It’s been great to learn with Peter as all of my sisters before me have too. It’s been hard and frustrating sometimes but I eventually got the hang of it as everyone does. He is a very good teacher and pushes you to do your best. I’m so glad I passed first time with only two minors! Thank you Peter!
