Show Me Tell Me Questions 4 – Driving Instructor Thatcham

This blog is the final look at the remaining three (of fourteen) ‘Tell Me’questions that you may face during the ‘Show Me, Tell Me’ section of your practical driving test. It is important that you get to grips with what each of these questions involve and the reasons why they are asked.
12. Open the bonnet and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.

A: Identify the dipstick and oil level indicator, then describe how you would check the oil level against the minimum and maximum markers.

13. Open the bonnet and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient engine coolant.

A: Identify the high and low level markings on the header tank where it is fitted or on the radiator filler cap, and describe how to top the coolant up to the correct level.

14. Open the bonnet and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.

A: Identify the fluid reservoir and check that the level against the high and low markings is satisfactory.
Whether you are learning in Thatcham, or elsewhere, ask your driving instructor to go through these if you are unsure about them, because you do not want to risk failure due to a lack of knowledge. The following blogs will explore the seven possible ‘Show Me’ questions that will be included in the practical driving test, which will require more than just lifting the bonnet and pointing. They require you to interact with aspects of the vehicle, such as the headlights, windscreen wipers, and demister.

  1. I couldn’t have asked for a better driving instructor. Peter was superb with his communication and explanations, patience and good humour. He taught me completely from scratch and helped me to pass my test first time. I really developed my understanding and confidence in my lessons with him, and will always remember his funny driving rhymes! Thank you Peter!
