In a recent survey, Ageas and the RAC found that three in every ten motorists prefer to avoid narrow country roads on their journeys if possible. The main reason identified was driver-anxiety, with over 50% of those questioned saying that they find driving on the narrow country roads as too stressful and, perhaps expectantly, this figure rises to 76% for motorists who are based in urban areas.
The most prominent route of these stresses (around 61% each) are caused by a) the difficulty and risk required in squeezing past other vehicles on the narrow lanes, and b) the fear crashing head on into another road-user. There is also anxiety surrounding the etiquette one should be privy to while using these roads. For instance, who should be the first to reverse if two drivers meet in a tough spot? One in ten drivers admitted to getting into a verbal altercation regarding who should reverse back. And what if a tractor is approaching and blocks the road? Around a third of those asked also argued that the default speed limit of 60mph is too high, and probably leads to many unnecessary accidents.
To avoid these types of roads the average motorist is willing to add around 16 miles to their journey time. People used to urban driving said they would be prepared to add 23 miles onto their journeys.
Driving schools should take their pupils around all types of UK road, including Basingstoke, in order to prepare them for these kinds of worrisome scenarios and to encourage sensible navigation.

Brilliant driving instructor, helped me pass second time and if it wasn’t for Peter I wouldn’t have my independence!
Hi Charlie.
Thanks for your review. I see you’ve been driving all over the country including Manchester London and Wales. Well done 🙂
