In the UK, the first speed camera was installed in 1991 and they proved so popular with motorists we now have 7,000 of them. Interesting trivia for you: the UK has the 4th highest number of speed cameras in the world, and when calculating per 1000km we tally behind Italy, Malta, and Belgium.
As with most things, various urban-myths and rumours tend to crop up surrounding speed cameras – particularly methods used to avoid being flashed and fined. Let’s have a look at a few:
Supposedly, if you didn’t see the camera flash it means you haven’t been clocked. FALSE! There are more than 12 types of speed camera used to monitor UK speeders which don’t flash. However, the Government did admit that only half of Britain’s speed cameras are actually functioning. But is it worth the risk?
Another myth suggests that changing lanes or using a lorry to hide behind can obstruct a camera’s speed check. Modern plate checking tech is just too effective for this to be a viable tactic. Often, they’ve been monitoring your car for longer than you’d think.
I have also heard people claim that speeding up in a camera’s immediate proximity can trick the speed-check. This is stupid. Don’t do it.
You might be sceptical, but perhaps the best way to avoid getting clocked by the camera is to drive safely and within the speed limit. Driving instructors in Basingstoke should be encouraging this behaviour in their pupils, possibly even making them aware of the financial risks associated with unlawful driving habits.
