It appears that the collective cabin-fever of the lockdowns has affected our behaviours in more ways than one. People want more flexibility in their work, as far as how often they spend in the office vs at home, people are driving less due to the lack of morning and evening commutes, including in places like Tilehurst. But according to a survey conducted by the dashcam manufacturer, Nextbase, a worrying amount of UK motorists feel that they have fallen into bad driving habits since pandemic began. Of the 1500 drivers questioned, over 20% said that sometime over lockdown they began driving one-handed, 12% said that they have become more easily distracted behind the wheel, and 15% stated that they drive much faster than they used to. This rings true to the Government data which revealed that drivers caught speeding increased by 7% since the first lockdown.

A further poll by Nextbase found that almost 50% of UK drivers hold some anxiety about taking on long journeys again, with around 30% describing their concerns around using motorways. Even more disturbing, is that 14% of those surveyed felt that they had ‘completely forgotten how to drive’. And a further 1 out of 10 said they no longer remember anything from their theory tests.

Perhaps with this widespread lack of confidence driving schools and instructors are likely to see an uptick in people applying for refresher driving lessons to ensure that their skills are back up to scratch before tackling longer journeys again.
