Congratulations Huseyin Aydin on passing your automatic driving test in Newbury on your first attempt. Congratulations too to your instructor Tomasz completing a hat-trick of passes for the week. Thank you too for your great review.

According to data from the DVLA approximately 92,000 UK drivers, including those in Newbury, are teetering on the precipice of losing their license after accruing between nine and eleven penalty points on their license. Only a small percentage of these motorists are likely to continue driving if more points are added to their license as courts can give special permission if a driving ban would cause the driver ‘exceptionally difficult’ circumstances. But the majority will be banned if they continue to mount points. Offences that most commonly lead to penalty points are driving through red lights, using a mobile phone behind the wheel, uninsured driving, and, of course, speeding.

The Director of Policy and Research at IAM RoadSmart, Neil Greig, warns that it is not the wilful maliciousness of a typical driver that causes them to get penalised, but more mundane instances of poor judgement, ignorance, and overall negative driving habits which are likely to see many people lose their licenses. Greig also described the potential usefulness of highlighting to drivers how easy it is for motorists to amass points. I would also encourage driving instructors, even during intensive lessons, to go over these fundamental reasons why people can exceed the threshold for penalty points. The RAC points out that motorists must be made aware that even ‘a lack of basic vehicle maintenance’ – such as unsuitable tyres and inadequate suspension, etc. may all result in penalty points and fines.
