Here is an exciting revelation for some in Newbury who are desperate for a holiday abroad: It has been announced that those who have received double jabs in order to vaccinate against Covid-19 will no longer need to quarantine once they have returned to England from an amber list country. The Department of Transport has given July 19th as the date that this new rule comes into effect. This amendment will only be open to those who can prove, via a vaccination letter or a notification on the main NHS app, that they have received both doses of the vaccination.
Grant Shapps, the Transport Secretary, has said that this change does not alter the requirement for people to pay for Covid tests before and after their return to the UK. According to the RAC, ‘Fully-vaccinated drivers hitting the road to amber list countries will still be required to take a pre-departure test three days before returning, and a PCR test on or before day two. However, they will be exempt from a day eight test.’
There is likely to be a surge of road-trippers to popular European destinations such as France, Germany, Spain, The Netherlands, Switzerland and Belgium. (I happen to know of a few driving instructors that could do with a break…) But just because the UK has changed its quarantine policy, this does not affect the quarantine practices of other countries. Shapps also highlighted the fact that Covid, and the world’s reaction to it, is still unpredictable. Amber list countries could still turn red.
